Topic: Conference "Inference, Consequence, and Meaning"
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Inference, Consequence, and Meaning
Sofia, December 3-4, 2008.
The goal:
Although disregarded by some philosophical celebrities, the question “what is meaning” still attracts the attention of a large and heterogeneous community of scholars, who are not satisfied with the way the presently dominant views of meaning deal with what they find meaningful in various particular contexts.
Part of this community tries to elaborate some of the traditional views according to which meanings are objects – either physical, mental, or abstract. For some decades, however, a viable alternative to the traditional views has been gaining adherents. According to this new rival, the meaning of an expression is not a matter of the object, to which this expression refers, or for which it stands, but rather it is revealed by the way we use it, and in particular, by its inferential role.
The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers who are interested in sharing their results about the theoretical applications and the perspectives as well as the limits of and the challenges to what is known today as the inferentialist approach to semantics.
Recognizing Jaroslav Peregrin’s exceptional contribution to the subject, we have chosen his writings as a point of departure for the discussion (see: http://jarda.peregrin.cz/mybibl/) and we have invited him to give the introductory talk (the text available at: http://jarda.peregrin.cz/mybibl/PDFTxt/526.pdf).
Philosophers (especially philosophers of logic, language and science), logicians, and linguists are invited to take part in the conference.
Topics:
- Historical roots to inferentialism: the cleft between model theory and proof theory in logic (the logical predecessor of inferentialism: Gentzen, Dummett, Prawitz); the pragmatic turn in semantics (the philosophical predecessors of inferentialism – Wittgenstein, Sellars); Robert Brandom’s inferentialism;
- Contemporary versions of inferentialism and their applications to logical semantics and the semantics of ordinary language, the language of mathematics, and the languages of natural and social sciences;
- Inferentialism in a critical perspective: challenges, weaknesses, limits of application.
